I have yet to meet a client who comes to me and says “Adam, I want to increase my mobility by 25%!” Instead, most of my clients come to me with a life goal, something they wanted to be able to do (or keep doing) on a day-to-day basis.
This isn’t a set-it-and-forget-it plan! If we find along the way that your needs or circumstances have changed, we will adjust the program to ensure that we’re still on course to meet your goals.
Also, our journey together is designed to be as convenient for you as possible! Whether we find that in-person training or a virtual program is the best fit for you, all exercises are done in the comfort of your own home. This means there’s no fancy equipment to worry about and getting to your appointment is a breeze!

As we age, our bodies undergo various changes that can affect our ability to perform certain exercises. However, this doesn’t mean that seniors should shy away from physical activity. In fact, regular exercise is crucial for maintaining health and independence in later years.
Workouts for seniors are typically modified to be lower in intensity and impact. This means less strain on the joints and a lower risk of injury. Strength training might involve light weights or resistance bands, while cardio could be as simple as walking, biking, swimming and chair aerobics.
Balance and flexibility are also key focus areas in senior workouts. Exercises such as yoga and tai chi can improve balance, preventing falls, and increase flexibility, aiding in everyday tasks. Specific exercises for balance you can start doing right away are the Single Leg Balance and the Heel-toe-walk. Remember, it’s important to take your time with these exercises and have something nearby to grab onto in case you lose your balance. Range of motion exercises such as the Reach for the Sky can help with flexibility around the shoulders and upper back. Always stop if you feel pain and consult with a healthcare professional before starting any new exercise regimen.
When working with older clients who have potential health risks, it’s important to take several precautions. Before I start with any client I go through a comprehensive health screening questionnaire, and I take resting blood pressure and heart rate measurements. Also, when necessary I would request medical clearance for physical activity from a health care professional such as your family physician when required.
Monitoring the progress of a senior on a work out plan is important to ensure that they are achieving their fitness goals and staying healthy. There are several ways to track your progress, such as: – Measuring their weight, body fat percentage, and body mass index (BMI) regularly. These indicators can show how their body composition is changing as a result of their exercise routine.
– Recording your blood pressure, heart rate, before and after each workout session. These vital signs can reflect how their cardiovascular and metabolic health are improving with physical activity.
– Asking you to rate their perceived exertion, pain, and fatigue on a scale of 1 to 10 during and after each exercise. This can help assess how hard they are working and how well they are recovering from your workouts.
– Observing your mood, motivation, and satisfaction with their work out plan. These psychological factors can influence their adherence and enjoyment of their exercise program.
– Reviewing your performance on specific exercises, such as the number of repetitions, sets, duration, intensity, distance and rest time between sets. These metrics can show how your strength, endurance, flexibility, and balance are progressing over time.
Nutritional guidance for seniors is a complex and sensitive topic that requires specialized knowledge and skills. Seniors have different nutritional needs and preferences than younger adults, and they may face various challenges such as chronic diseases, medications, dental problems, or social isolation that affect their food intake and quality of life. Therefore, providing nutritional guidance to seniors is outside my scope of practice and I will have to refer you to the right professional that is properly trained and certified. In Canada, Registered Dietitians (RD) are licensed and trained to give nutritional advice.
